“I just wanted someone to share my dreams with.”
Rides a really fun line of surreal and far-out while also remaining earnest and romantic. Scored (perfectly) by an old bud of mine, Dan, and I definitely caught a couple other old Baltimore heads in the credits, which all makes total sense after viewing if you have any reference to the type of art that was coming out of the Wham City / MICA school scene over the last 15-20 years.

Once I got over feeling like he should have wiped the camera lens off and was able to lock into the hazy, muddy setting as a whole and appreciate those sorts of details not only visually but also with the sound design. This was my first viewing and it’s one of those that I bet when I watch it a second time I’ll be like “yeah this is a masterpiece.”

A documentary I was turned onto in the early 00s when I was working at a video store (RIP) in Raleigh and was getting *into* film/art/etc. I love old New York (this was made in 1998, which I guess is old now) and Timothy Speed Levich is a kook that always stuck with me. An all-timer for me.

Shoutout to free MUBI trial for reminding me of this one that I’d kind of forgotten about because it never played anywhere near me. Very fun combo of things from past and present and I am psyched for the future of this director. Also when I left my house right after viewing I was bummed that everything didn’t still look like this movie does thanks to the Kodak 16mm film choice. Big rec.

There’s no way to type “neo-fairytale” without sounding like a dweeb.
