Mickey 17 2025
Saw this late on a Saturday while out of town, and I think this movie caught me off guard. It would be great to find more stuff like this: a rewiring of one filmmaker’s past work wrapped up in one coherent whole, and done with class. It’s most useful now to me perhaps as a reminder that I need to jump back to Bong Joon-Ho’s previous films besides the heavy hitters like Snowpiercer, Parasite, and I guess Okja, because those movies have echoes in this film and there must be others I don’t yet comprehend.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 2017
A bizarre silhouette of masterstoke storytelling, unfortunately strangled by the clunky film that contains it. It’s probably for the best that McDonagh moved on from doing tired charicatures of midwestern people in 2017 to make a much better movie in ‘22. McDormand makes this one worth the watch and Rockwell can turn anything into gold but in the midst of this recent “the academy doesn’t watch movies” controversy — yeah that tracks.

Troy 2004
Rewatched this mess of a movie (Pitt’s worst performance ever) piecemeal over October/November 2024, finally concluding tonight. It remains unseated as the most comforting film for me. It’s got everything I loved as a kid and I always feel that way watching it.
But watching king Priam yell “have you no honor?!” as Greeks tear down statues around him, right before Agamemnon spears him through the back and moves on- I don’t know. Something about that feels so on-the-nose that it left me reeling. Probably nothing.

A Complete Unknown 2024
Mangold does something more with Bob Dylan than he managed with his subject in Walk the Line. The secret ingredient, I suspect, may be Edward Norton.
