with a remarkably funny cast, it’s a wonder how the characters seem to fall just short of being funny— the spirit of the joke is there but any element of genuine humor is distinctly lacking in a way that was incredible to see for all the wrong reasons

a sort of spiritual successor to other great Asian horror films like Ju-on or Impetigore, it reads as a natural evolution of other horror box office successes like Smile but with an added cultural specificity and a Sam Raimi-esque glee for unsettling shadowy figures and a Cronenbergian reverence for body horror and creature design
a long-winded resolution takes some of its bite but Kelly Marie Tran is sensational so it remains engaging even when it, narratively, feels inevitable
