‘A shadow looms in the dark’- words spoken by Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring could easily be applied to Nosferatu, Robert Eggers’ new movie. Moody, gothic and hauntingly beautiful, it’s an unsettling experience.

This is less a remake of the 1922 film and more a retelling. For one thing, it’s not a silent movie and secondly, it’s in colour, although the pallet is drained away enough to make it look monochromatic at times.

    Eggers keeps Count Orlok in…

Challenge 24- a film with my favourite actor/actress (Cary Grant)

Cary Grant has had many imitators, but none have truly captured the essence of what made him possibly the greatest movie star of all time. In North by Northwest, Alfred Hitchcock provides Grant with one of his finest displays of his considerable talents.

The reason why Grant is my favourite actor is encapsulated in this film. His portrayal of Roger Thornhill is magnificent, a perfectly pitched…

Film 4- Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase (2001)

And so I’ve reached the last film in my first category of Scooby-Doo movies, the final one produced by the Mook Animation Studio, the last one to feature Scott Innes as Scooby and Shaggy, one of the last to feature real monsters.

Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase is a deep dive into nostalgia. It’s a madcap, zany adventure that is somehow different and yet quintessential…

Happy 92nd birthday Sir Michael Caine!

Without Michael Caine, Harry Brown wouldn’t work. A film lacking in depth that often veers into deeply uncomfortable territory, it’s made watchable and indeed humanised by Caine standing tall at the centre.

This is a film about ugly people doing repugnant things. Its premise suggests a cross between Death Wish and Gran Torino, with Caine rivalling Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood as a senior citizen badass. There’s just one problem- Harry Brown is not…

Watched in tribute to Gene Hackman (1930-2025)

Damn, this one hurts. Another of the great actors has gone- the iconic Gene Hackman. Despite not making a film in 21 years, his death at age 95, especially in the circumstances surrounding it, feels less expected than it should be. Few actors could hold a candle to him when he was on form.

Hackman’s raw presence in front of a camera, his instinctive ability to play a wide range of emotions and…

Film 3- Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000)

More than anything else, Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders is a love story. For the first time, excluding Shaggy’s girlfriend Googie in The Reluctant Werewolf, Scooby and Shaggy fall in love with something other than food- hippy photographer Crystal and her dog Amber.

This being Scooby-Doo, especially in the post Zombie Island era, there are twists and turns in store before the duo can get…
