To steal another’s phrase about this movie - this is 2 hours of competency porn. On an objective level, this film is a 4 and a half stars at the very least, but I’ve never quite resonated with it on an emotional level. It’s like a perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned steak, but with only a little sauce and no french fries or mashed potatoes. I guess I’m just a dumb dumb who needs the mashed potatoes.

The 40 Year Old Virgin 2005
I unironically think Carrell should’ve been nominated for an Oscar for this. There are almost no other actors who could nail the comedy, goofiness and heartwarming sincerity of this role. The only other person who came to mind was Phillip Seymour Hoffman and that might be it.
This film is the Iron Man of 2000’s comedies.
