P: an inverted Oresteia. Verhoeven explains colonialism as the direct result of indulging revenge, and a winner take all mentality, over bringing war criminals to justice. At times Verhoeven seems kind of a nazi sympathizer but I think he's just really a self-hating Dutchman
K: I saw this about 15 years ago when I was in college. I remembered only three things: that I really enjoyed it, that the love interest was a sad Nazi, and the scene with chocolate…
P: Donner, who I didn't know is Rudolph' papa, is toxic, but he has the best line: "his beak blinks like a blinkin' beacon!"
K: our son refers to this movie as “Spooky Reindeer”; he tells me to fast forward through the Hermey bits, and I agree, his storyline is a snoozefest. Honestly the reveal that Rudolph is a nepo baby ruined the whole mystique for me. Clarice can do better.
P: just the right level of surreal for me and I love how optimistic Lynch is about the world. A movie about becoming a man
K: first time watching. I laughed, I got spooked— often at the same time.
