I enjoyed myself, but I was expecting to like it more.

Obviously the puppetry and animation are incredible. But despite the oddity of its characters and events, it's shot, lit, and scored conventionally, which takes away some magic. I'm drawn to fantasy that's wholeheartedly sentimental or utterly committed to being matter-of-fact and breathless, like the world's blowing through you. This feels very 80s Hollywood-status quo despite its apparent freakery.

Performances were one-note and low energy. The little witticisms that dot the stories don't hit like they should!

High-concept for an on-par 'make a nerd cool' story. Not a terrible one of those, at least. Big, dumb, loud, sentimental, functional, 80s.

Occasional haunting visuals, like two cars from the opening scene rusting undisturbed within a quarry... Little ideas like a spirit speaking through a specific FM band...

Great pop soundtrack, and not just the same ol' same ol'. So Mean To Me, When The Children Make The Mighty Fall

Fantastic music and charismatic casting choices. Some scenes of real wonder and poignancy. Unfortunately, this two-part TV movie drags in the second half, devoting the last of its 40 minutes to dreamlike scenes featuring many re-used characters and locations.

This is long-form animation in its ideal format. The container of an Olympic broadcast makes the sudden transition from sketch to sketch natural. The economy of animation, seeing a character and thinking "I love them," "That prick!" "How are they gonna make it out of this one?!" Balances loose fun and pathos well with a mix of one-off and recurring characters. Captures the wonderful, brain-souping feeling of broadcast sports, but the beautiful animation keeps you from feeling like a sucked…
