    A reflection of what African cinema looks like when purely African. Yeelen reminds me of the profound folklore nested within my continent that I am yet to discover. It is a raw, mystifying act that leaves me steepled between admiration and longing. There is a real depth to Nyankoro that I feel was not fully explored, and I wish we got to see Attou as someone fully in control of her life. 
    Nonetheless, Cissé as a director is phenomenal at crafting landscapes that depict both Africa’s beauty and brutality, perhaps even one in the other, perhaps they are one and the same.
