Has a little bit of that Hulk '03 energy. Lovely when it's just a genuinely sad march towards transformation and the grave, less effective when it leans into the "scares" (which feel like studio notes). All the degradation of senses sequences are where the film shines. Lovely, atypical scoring by Benjamin Wallfisch, especially the ending track. Not a fully fleshed-out experience, but a good attempt at something novel from worn material.

Needless regurgitation. Brain-dead.

Shouted and clapped more during this than I've ever done before in a theater. Perfect cinema experience. The kind of finely calibrated, full-hearted filmmaking so unashamed and earnest in its concerns and pleasures. Breathtaking sound design (the opening Rama mob arrest is a marvel in this regard), all-timer iconic image-sculpting (the animal army reveal, Rama's forest spotlight unveiling), and a pop-vital revolutionary fervor. Delightful, reinvigorated my love of cinema during a lull for me.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time 2021
A long (at times meandering) wind-up to an exquisite, emotional wallop that combines every technique Anno has amassed during his years to free a new layer of epiphany. The last 45 minutes or so reject the trappings of genre armor to grasp the characters at their most naked, finally letting us touch at the soul of these characters. Final moments here demolished me. Goodbye, Evangelion.
