I did not expect the production design on this to go as hard as it did. Think stranger things and the last of us but with more cosmic/lovecraftian horror. I find both of these actors very charming and the romance was lowkey cute.
Tonally this movie is weird, with a romantic first act, horror second act, and an action third act. But the leads and the design won me over in the end.

There’s something so interesting happening in the editing/direction of this, how some shots of the characters interacting cut away and rush ahead to a new moment, while other more mundane shots where the characters have left the frame are allowed to linger for so much longer. I loved noticing those moments and thinking about what they were trying to say.
There are some truly gorgeous shots and the writing is so elegant, especially the father’s monologue at the end. …
Touching and beautiful. Probably the best color palate of any film I’ll see all year. Watched this the same day I finished a book with similar themes about the complexities of love and loneliness and closeness, so despite being a bit emotionally drained, I thought this was great.
