I started poking fun in my head with comments like “where are these kids’ parents” and “how does she graduate without ever going to school”. And then I - dangerously, ominously - was projecting myself and my deep love for my sister (something I feel you can only experience to know) onto these girls. And then I was gutted of all organs, leaving nothing but an empty shell. Probably the best thing I’ve seen released last year, only criticism is that I wish it were longer.

Coming-of-age is a precious, tumultuous and truly embarrassing time to be alive. I’d rather not be reminded of a time where I felt just as lost and unsure so I steer away from movies with this theme, hence why it took me so long to watch this. Love Lady Bird’s spirit in the cringe and bore of it all, but it’s also not really cringe or boring at all? Universal is the yearning to be liked by your mother, and the impulse to criticise and lecture your daughter into protection from harm, to be the “best version” of themselves.

Someone posted the entire movie on Twitter so obviously had to watch it as soon as I saw it. It’s all comfort and cuteness; had to fight the urge to pick up my Switch to play! No one else could make a slice-of-life, coming-of-age, cave exploration, alien encounter, girlhood dramedy about animals living in a small village! Missed my babies Timmy and Tommy though :(
