  Wings of Desire 1987

  Everyone wants to believe they’re a Damiel but we’re really just Cassiels (I may only be speaking for myself). It combines non-narrative documentary, contemporary culture piece, Hollywood romance, metaphysical rumination, and Peter Falk in way I can’t believe works and yet does.

  Starts off as too neat of a redemption story, reverses into too mean of a rug-pull, ends somewhere ultimately hopeful and uplifting.

  Unlike Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive where everything mostly fits into place, Inland Empire is adamant on dismantling any logical connections between each of its fractional narratives. The only thing that keeps the film together is the description from the creator himself: “a woman in trouble”.

  The sound engineer scene is the movie spilling its guts in front of you, just so it can later suck them back in and make you forget they were ever visible. At first I couldn’t decide if that “moment” near the end was a humorous gag on audience expectations for an answer. I am understanding it more so now as a representation of the folklore of the ancient natives. Either way I kinda wish I didn’t see it, the film is mostly in the ears anyways.
