“i had only to break it and i was free of it forever”
i watched this for the first time before i read the novella, then i watched it again after. strangely my enjoyment of the film increased despite now noticing how the film diverges from the source material, particularly with the ending. the only major critique i have is that larsen's depiction of irene's mind fracturing leading up to the ending rendered the ambiguity of the ending much more powerful in the novella; in the film it doesn't appear as three-dimensional as it does in the novella.

i read the book before the film because i wanted to be able to concentrate on the form of the film rather than the story. i think this is probably the best book-to-film adaptation i've seen based on form alone. somehow they managed to transcend the limits of adaptation from literary medium to visual medium which is not an easy feat.
