The US didn’t go to the moon to beat the Russians, but to beat David Lean at making people look like tiny things in an enormous world.
When Lawrence gets back to Cairo, the whole national project he’s spent the past two hours explicitly indifferent to goes into full mobilization. The horizontal space turns vertical, the music stately and gleeful. It’s masterfully upsetting.
