A Tarantino film first, a western second, and a social commentary third. In that order. And by that I mean it is very similar in feel to other Tarantino films, particularly Inglourious Basterds. Then, it's also a western, and then tangentially about slavery and race. I don't think it is trying to be taken seriously as social commentary and the story is more so focused on the individual journey of Django.
Known as one of the saddest films of all time. I feel like this expectation made the movie less sad to me than maybe it really is. At points, I was actually not understanding the boy's decisions, which, in a weird way, made me slightly less empathetic to his situation than I should have been. Still good, though
Blurs the line between reality and fiction. Sometimes when I watch films, I have trouble feeling empathetic to the characters because I know it is not real. This is not like other films in that regard.
A little slow maybe for the average person, but a very unique experience and still accessible for most people.
