    love getting to see the emerging work of a now-prominent auteur, especially when one’s style of storytelling is already so developed. love stories like this that start with a very simple idea but end up with the protagonist spiraling out of control. inspiring really

    as evident in his ocean’s trilogy soderbergh has a real old hollywood way of directing movies sexy and smart. this one in particular is fraught with psychosexual tension and dinner parties that evoke modernist theatre as well as paperback whodunnits. all the light fixtures are gorgeous. cate blanchett is worth risking it all for. marisa abela shines too

    i did not think ariana grande had the sauce to deliver any of glinda’s power but she is so funny in this. cynthia erivo et al. are great too. there are some really delightful numbers and great production design but there are times when i wish they would slow down and shoot wider! let me see it! and frankly the lack of red is a crime. for all the talk of avoiding color for realism’s sake, there is some seriously unattractive cgi in the finale. they failed to beat the 1930s effects i’m afraid. puppets and matte paintings forever
