Memories of Murder 2003
There are so many subtleties that Bong throws into this movie that I didn't notice before because of the mystery. The town itself draws so many parallels to Korea during this time. The Hwaseong murders literalize the fear of the unknown and the moral descent of a country thrust into rapid change. Korea was rapidly changing amid assassinations, coups, and political turmoil in the throes of a struggle for democracy.
Modernization under a military dictatorship dressed up the country outwardly…

Exhuma 2024
Watched this on the plane ride back from Korea and it brilliantly tied together so many themes from my trip. I love how it explored spirituality as it relates to generational trauma. The history of Korea's prosperous past, the Joseon dynasty being ended by corruption, the still remnant scars from imperialist Japan, and the current status quo shaped by colonial Christian America. The ensemble all turn in great performances and Choi Min-Sik is fantastic as always. The movie looks and feels so textured and you really feel the dread and unease along with these characters. Looking forward to going through the directors past and future work.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain 2021

He embraced different cultures and examined them as a fabric of our shared humanity in lieu of exoticization or exploitation. At a time when food…

Minari 2020
It's been an hour since the end credits rolled but I'm still reeling. Planning to write more after a rewatch but I've never felt this way before in my life. MINARI completely cut to the core of who I am and of everything that brought me here. The conflict between the Han inherent to Koreans vs the audacity of the American Dream is so brilliantly captured and explored. There is no tension between heroes or villains here, only lofty aspirations…
