Fits well into the category of “sci-fi films turned into reality” — and also the category of “films that would’ve been better if they cut 30 minutes or so”.
Before watching this movie: I’ll gladly watch anything with the Wedding Crashers duo in it.
After watching this movie: Hm, maybe not so much anymore.
A 102-year-old masterclass in visual storytelling.
I loved almost everything about this film: the visual juxtaposition between shadows and light, the way the shots are framed to heighten the terror the characters are feeling, Max Schreck’s performance, the ethereal organ music, the foreboding atmosphere, etc.
One thing that stuck with me was how F.W. Murnau seamlessly weaves this sense of uneasiness throughout each and every shot. Rarely does the film drag or have a spot where you can rest and take…
Luca Guadagnino has solidified his place as one of the best directors working today. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross’ score is on repeat on my phone right now, even hours after watching the film. Zendaya is super charismatic and excellent here (despite me thinking that she was the weakest link in Dune: Part Two earlier this year), but in terms of performances, Matt Faist and Josh O’Connor are the standouts for me. The urge to rewatch the film this instant is so very strong. Easily one of my favorites of the year so far.
