It's all vibes in this played-so-serious-it's-hilarious take on Jesus Christ Superstar. Very much in the same vein as Ayoade & Berry's other works - there are no big surprises here if you've seen Dark Place, but the love for the source material really shines.
It's tarnished, unfortunately, in a modern watch, by how awful Linehan is as a human, and how much Ayoade's stepped up to support him.
Couldn't get past the seemingly never-ending segment about rich fit people surfing, which seemed more an excuse to film a lady in a bikini than anything about Peru. I did learn about the traditional boats that fishermen used, though. That was nice.
This series is a big hate-watch epic for me - I can't give it one star because it is undeniably technically incredibly well made. But it feels utterly devoid of emotion, and for all its gorgeous set pieces, I leave feeling nothing.
Beautiful painterly epic scenery... but painfully monochromatic to the point of becoming boring.
Abysmally insincere acting by Chalemet. I think he's terrible in everything I've seen him in, tho - his acting style feels practiced and artificial in…
