The Boy and the Heron 2023
Starts wonderfully, but ultimately becomes a hot mess of technicolour wonders, just not all in a good way.
Definitely feels like a Greatest Hits festival set, but also with more than a touch of 2001 towards the end. This is a Very Good Thing, but I cared much less about the parakeets.
As normal I watched with the original Japanese + Subtitles, but feel i may have missed something with the stellar cast for the English language dub...

I've read a lot of reviews that seem to really dislike this, and my interpretation of these reviews coalesces around a number of themes.
(a) it's a dangerous thing that will encourage violent incels or antifa to commit acts of violence and claim Joker said it would be OK
(b) it's a shameless rip-off of Taxi Driver, King of Comedy (etc), and nowhere near as good
