Hooptober XI: Film #12
Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival w/ live accompaniment
Efficient 1981 creature feature with the soul of a slasher. Charming and intimate. Great cast, score, and a story that moves. Really, really love the setting—a snowy little mining town with a silver mine abandoned since the early 1900s, now being reopened…The creatures themselves are nothing particularly special (sharp-teethed turtle-possums with slicing tentacles), but the choice to withhold their full appearance until the end of the film helps to maintain an effective amount of dread/tension.
