with the use of japan and japanese as a token "other", alongside having a very white saviour-y character, it felt more than just a little racist tbh. still very touching and made me cry a lot but im conflicted. the animation was beautiful

For an almost 40 year old movie it feels surprisingly timeless? The rotating shots were sick and made it feel very claustrophobic, but the flashbacks really diminished that. The monologue was great, his acting was great. The contrast between the camera and the gun shots was really cool, I really thought for a second that the kid was going to shoot him.
