In my mind sci-fi generally exists on a scale between being grounded and schlockiness. Interstellar feels unique because it somehow does both in a complementary manner - and subsequently can hit a particular emotional nerve that is hard to match in big-budget cinema.
Obvs the score being amazing is a big part of that too.
Between this, Swiss Army Man, and the video to Turn Down For What (yep, same guys) I think the Daniels have really mastered the art of the human body just being a really cool and funny canvas.
EEAAO isn’t completely cohesive enough under the surface, but I don’t think that really matters. If you manage to shove this many well executed fun ideas into a movie and make the heartfelt aspect feel genuine then that’s almost as good an emphasis of positive nihilism as anything.
Magnolia? More like Monologue-lia!
Not gonna lie, somewhere around the midpoint I was starting to lose interest. It kind of felt like more had been bitten off than chewable and there’s only so much zipping between scenes with the same constant simmering tension you can do before it gets kind of old and directionless.
But then the film subtly plays its actual hand and it’s genuinely beautiful - a weird mix of cinematic theatricality and complete earnestness that feels human in a way most movies couldn’t replicate.
And my God can PTA nail a song choice.
