The human world is filled with seams— joints where two or more things connect, held together with physics and magic. The edges between our crown moldings and our door frames; the fused boundaries of plates of metal, hidden under layers of paint and protective coating, coming together to shuttle us from point A to B; the plastic casings of our favorite whatsits littering our lives: all giving a false sense of permanence.

But these junctions aren't permanent. They are as…

You don’t have to read what William Friedkin himself said about this film to understand where he was mentally during the making of this movie. Seasonal Affective Disorder put to film is what you’ve got here, William. I see you.

Fate, death, and the unstoppable God-Machine called Life, steadily advances over all of us, consuming and chewing anything of value. Pretty potent stuff. BUT WAIT, THAT’S NOT ALL: flourishes of jingoistic greed, capitalistic “progress”, and the perceived (non)value of human life…

How have I never seen this on any lists about great movie dads?? First, Powers Boothe is luggin around THAT name. Then he doubles down by giving an incredible, believable performance. In a Movie Dad Draft, I’m picking Powers’ Bill before the Liam Neeson dad in Taken. (The comparisons make a lot more sense if you see the film)  He’s the hidden second round Jokic-like unicorn of movie dads.

Now, I’m no prude, but I will admit to having a…

He shares a name with your annoying nephew, but has the emotional maturity of a divorced dad who needs to “find himself”.

It feels pretty obvious that Kevin Costner should have made this a miniseries, but it’s also pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be compared to all the other episodic westerns available on your [name-a-streaming-service].

He had to Go His Own Way.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’s narrative is long and clunky as its title… but…

You’ve likely heard all the jokes about Lynch’s Disney film already, so I’ll save you those takes and leave you a small dose of vulnerability:

My dad was the toughest sonofabitch I knew, growing up. He was creative, sarcastic, and very stubborn. He suffered a stroke several years ago— he is in a home, now. Sapped of his strength.

I see some of him in Richard Farnsworth’s Alvin Straight. My dad doesn’t have the old-man charm and the doughy eyes…

Horror, by tradition, is steeped in metaphor. And with that, comes a subjectivity to any given horror film’s reception.  Horror sometimes fails to stick the landing at the nexus point of Character, Story, and Expression. Usually, one of those works harder than the rest. Rarely is it balanced so effectively than in Barbarian.

The emotional weight and intention of the theme doesn’t overshadow the horror genre aspect of the story and it’s characters. It’s also a genuine riot. It may be…
