Gorgeous reminder that dialogue and villains aren’t required to tell a captivating story

Ok, I can officially add Osgood Perkins to my list of directors that can piss off. How do you make Stephen King splatter horror-comedy have zero atmosphere and very few earned laughs? The splatter is entertaining but never surprising. The movie wanted to be creepy and absurdist; it succeeded with neither. Apple pie in a bag was hilarious though.

The trailer took away from the wonderful tension this film builds in the first two acts as the film explores infidelity, class battles, weak men, and misjudging character. And while a menacing James McAvoy is a masterful thing to watch, the 3rd act feels far too safe and clean.

Gothic Masterpiece? Absolutely. Best cinematography and location scouts of the year? Easily. The films 3rd act does little to provide me the payoff I was hoping for. I wasn’t hoping for a happy ending but I didn’t want our villain to go out so easily looking for his own happy ending.
