Great setup that relies far more on setting up Frank Herbert‘s world of Dune than any major action sequences or similarly cheap filmmaking. With great performances all around, it is a refreshingly slow-paced Sci-Fi movie, which allows for far more nuance and exploration than most films in the genre.

Sadly, while the first part is truly excellent, Villeneuve doesn’t quite stick the landing. While there are great scenes, Paul‘s speech to the Fremen being the obvious highlight, it simply doesn’t manage to put the themes and character development of the book to the screen. Choosing sleek and stylish action scenes over meaningful, but slower moments that would help round out the story makes Dune an above average sequel at best.

Maybe not Miyazaki‘s best film to date, but certainly up there with his greatest works. A slightly convoluted story, which arguably is to be expected, blends with animation that, even for Studio Ghibli, looks absolutely magnificent.
Overall still a must-see for any fan of animation, of the weirder kind of fairytales or of other movies by Ghibli and especially by Miyazaki.
