While most the performances felt over the top, there’s a dignity that comes across with Julia Robert’s character which alludes to the stardom that trailed her shorty after this film’s release. She withholds being a doormat to someone who’s higher in social class but lower in actual class.
I also couldn’t shake how much Vincent D looked like Jack Nicholson in One Who Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
Winona shines and Jeff Daniels can’t catch a break. A bunch of hype for a hometown starlet that amounts to nothing other than a devotion to the male gaze.
What an exciting watch. Transitions within musical numbers were bold and far from obvious. Just the sheer detail that went into everything was a delight. It had a rabid pace and even went beyond the typical presentation of how fame can be destructive. It added a personal touch of what music meant to Robbie.
A bleak look a brash desire to elevate from your battered circumstances. Every character is treated with dignity and Baker can really craft performances with subtle details. Pacing can be critiqued and visual style is up in the air, but the empathy this film attempts to capture was truly touching to see.
