The Brutalist is a visually stunning film that intricately divides its narrative into two compelling segments, each offering a unique and immersive experience. The film's length is hardly noticeable, as the captivating performances, intriguing story, and stunning visuals keep you engaged. The scenes featuring Carrara marble are particularly mesmerizing, providing a feast for the eyes. Reflecting on the film a day later, I find it even more impressive, and I’m eager to watch it again to fully appreciate certain elements. Adrien Brody's performance is outstanding.
Is a movie worth recommending for its engaging storytelling and exploration of compelling themes. The film captivates with its narrative and features a standout performance by the lead actress. While the film's portrayal of its subjects is strong, it fell to me just short of evoking the deeper emotional impact I would have expected, given the potential of its themes. Nonetheless, the evolution of the story over time is beautifully handled, and the direction is notably skillful.
She, Laure Calamy, is immense. Already after seeing her in "À plein temps" and again in this movie, I am convinced she is one of the best contemporary actresses. That being said, the film entirely rests on her shoulders; without her presence, it would have been rather bland. But she adds every spice needed and enhances the flavors every time she appears.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a movie that unfortunately doesn't live up to the director's usual high standards. While Guadagnino is known for his rich, emotionally complex storytelling and visually stunning films, "Queer" falls flat in comparison. Perhaps it's the fatigue I felt going into the screening, but the movie failed to captivate or entertain me, so much so that I left before the finale.
