Fun but a bit too spazzy, zoomer, and nihilistic for my tastes.

    A Dark Song

A Dark Song pays homage to the world of ceremonial magick and occultism which is where it succeeds most. The central male character comes off as a version of Aleister Crowley who was known to be deeply knowledgeable in the occult, but those who have studied his biography will see the other version of Crowley that was known only personally to his acquaintances… a man that was originally a social outcast and reject who capitalized on his own ego, arrogance, and vast intellect to spur an entire countercultural movement.

Emotionally devastating but brilliantly acted and rich with that Texas Americana feel.

My grandpa has seen the Von Ehrichs wrestle back in the day.

    ★★★

The first 1/3 of this movie is very suspenseful. It’s a revenge western with a wedding day shootout to set events into motion. What follows isn’t particularly remarkable despite the nuanced takes on moral questions and genre subversions. The town that at first makes up the background of the film instead becomes a central communal character that, despite its synergy and quirkiness, can’t help but stumble into a lackluster conclusion.
