  If Alfonso Cuaron had directed Finding Nemo, it’d be something like this — gorgeous, nerve-shredding, hallucinatory. Still not sure what it all means, which makes it all the more haunting.

  A transcendent, symphonic novel of a movie that reaches some of the year’s highest highs. The fact it was made so cheaply boggles the mind — it looks and sounds better than films twenty times its budget.

  However, something happens at around the six and a half hour mark that soured the whole enterprise for me. A cheap, unearned “twist” that makes you question all of the other good decisions the movie has made.

  Maybe Brady Corbet’s next movie will be a masterpiece. This one isn’t.
