Perfume: The Story of a Murderer 2006
I’d be curious to see Robert Eggers tackle this as a miniseries in Odorama. This only modestly stinks as a follow-up to reading such a rich novel. A bit perfunctory, formulaic and plodding toward the expansive sensory powers, human pleasures and disgust so consumingly clear on the page. A tricky translation given the book’s olfactory essence, it never quite captures the ghoulish Grenouille for me, either due to casting, tone or time constraints. Maintains the most memorable events like the ending(s), yet like some designer imposter perfume is missing those ineffable, essential components to allow it to luxuriate and linger.

The Monkey 2025
If everything or nothing is accidental it explains why this occasionally feels like Oz Perkins drop kicking a cherry pie. Sloppy and unserious, albeit affectionately so. More interesting knowing of the director’s own family horrors yet gleefully haphazard and indifferent all its own, beating the familiar drum/cymbal of a bare bones Stephen King short story with an offbeat tone, especially compared to early efforts like “I Am the Pretty Thing…” Wisely doubles down on death scenes and Theo James.

Home for the Holidays 1995
I’d be floating past my toxic family dysfunction too if I had one magical gay sibling serving up magically single and hyper-interested Dylan McDermott for Thanksgiving.
