Children of Men 2006
Ever since I first saw this film I've loved it and go back every few years to remind myself why.
It comes across very bleak, and it is, but it's very believable and with excellent, subtle, world-building. And there is hope.
The action scenes are incredible punchy and heart-racing, and the attention to detail also very satisfying.
The acting is great and also the soundtrack incredible.
Recommend chasing this up with Shoot-Em-Up to experience the full range of Clive Owen.Translated from by

Dog Soldiers 2002
Really enjoyable film about a bunch of dudes lost in the woods. For what was presumably a low budget, the acting is very solid, effects (explosions, costumes, transformations) are genuinely impressive and pacing is tight with some cracking one liners which lighten it up in parts but never become hammy or interfering. All the characters are pretty believable, even if their situation is not, and the team work and comraderie in the squad is great.

it's a story that's been told so many times, but it's such a good story and this is a very good telling of it.
if you liked Eggers' other movies you'll like this one. it's very much of his style, but his style definitely suits this material.
