  The Chronicles of Riddick 2004

  More like the Chronicles of MIDDICK, no but for real this is a bit disappointing after how much I loved Pitch Black. It unfortunately isn’t great because Riddick is the ONLY thing they focus on.

  Yeah there’s a cool invading empire, yeah characters from the previous movie return, yeah we get Riddick’s backstory (kinda) but we’re just stuck with the dude himself rather than a situation he happens to be trapped in.

  Pitch Black 2000

  I wanted to get into the Riddickverse and this was an excellent start! After the very silly monolouge by Riddick right at the opener we get a really grounded look at a group of survivors trying to figure out what planet they’ve crash landed on, how to get off of it, and why the hell isn’t there anyone else here.

  I was fuckin hooting and hollering the whole time man. Sometimes a move is just fun and makes you happy. It’s very clear the movie was made by two guys going “Ok no but it would be funnier if it happened another time” every time they hurt the protagonist.

  And goddamn it they were right every time.

  This shit rules so hard, a movie that knows what it is, what it wants to say, and how it wants to go about saying it. There’s a lot to discuss here theme wise: from slowly rotting your humanity for fame and the mother/daughter dynamic Sue and Elisabeth had going on.

  I was thrown off by how sexual all of Sue’s scenes/shots were at first but it cleared up for me when I realized we’re watching these characters through the…
