The Zone of Interest 2023
Obviously not about the banality of evil, but about the necessary—and necessarily disavowed—evil that yawns beneath the banal. These worlds aren’t compartmentalized: the flowers are fed with ashes. The space for life, Lebensraum, is cleared by death. This is our condition—epitomized by, yet not at all exclusive to, Auschwitz. How do we tend to this memory without letting its infinite judgment pass over us? Without attempting to separate what the film so clearly shows us cannot be held apart?

The cinematic equivalent of an anxiety attack. Something about the dizzying negativity of financial speculation, built on the exploitation of labor and land--my heart is still pounding in my ears and anything more coherent will have to wait until I've done a few hours of deep breathing.
