  Carpenter’s Magnum Opus. As spectacular and (even today) impressive as the practical special effects are in this film, the tension, paranoia and distrust that slowly permeates the the plot is equally as skillful - perfected by an all star cast of predominantly tenured character actors.

  Newman & Kennedy deserve all the praise (and perhaps more) they received, but the supporting cast deserves just as much. From Harry Dean Stanton to Strother Martin (per usual stealing every scene he’s in). My personal favorite though being Jo Van Fleet.
  Beatrice Straight has the the record for shortest performance to win an Oscar (5 minutes, in Network); Jo Van Fleet fit more of a performance in about 4 minutes, as the ailing Arletta, than anyone I’ve seen.

Following
