Nostalgia is the star here really, even the presence of film's biggest fanboy Pegg can't compete with the sheer amount of pop-culture iconography that carries the plot along what would otherwise be a pretty standard hero's journey. There is also what seems to be cursory nods at diversity without actually breaking ground, but it's hardly surprising given the demographic it's clearly aimed at. Otherwise, it's a distracting bit of fun. Cooke, Pegg, and Mendelsohn are the cast standouts.

Wild Wild West 1999
So very silly but still a lot of fun. Very much appreciate the attempt at it being steampunk but the greater proportion of the design puts it firmly into a traditional western - seems like this is an attempt at introducing steampunk to a wider audience, and it's disappointing for it to be a failure in that regard at least. Kline, Hayek, Branagh, and Walsh are as always standouts in the cast, doing what they do best.

Zoolander 2001
Um, did I miss something? Maybe this movie has dated quite a bit but I didn't find it hilariously funny like most people seem to, just mildly so. That's not to say it's completely without laughs - despite his mugging, Stiller has captured vapid and unintelligent quite well. Wilson is the more charismatic of the two though and plays more…

Superman Returns 2006
Interesting addition to the Donner films and while it starts off reasonably well, it loses energy and fizzles out a bit toward the end - after an amazing plane rescue, the stakes don't appear to be all that important, especially once Luthor creates his new piece of land and seems to just wait for Superman to come back from the seeming-dead to destroy it. Routh is a capable continuer of Reeve's style of both Kal-El and Kent, and Spacey excels…
