As someone who thought Paddington 2 was a 5-star triumph, it kind of pains me to rate this as low as it is.
That’s not to say it’s bad - Paddington is still so cute and charming, the jokes are executed so cleanly and sharply, and the story is as warm and sweet as marmalade on toast. There were a lot of really cute and well done visual references, and a whole musical number with singing nuns is really delightful. …
On a visual and experiential level, this film was a feast. The first act moved seamlessly from beautiful winter shots, to an unnerving experience with a rural village, to a haunting carriage ride, to the feeling of prey before a lion. The film so perfectly keeps Nosferatu out of the center of the frame while making his voice menacingly large, resulting in me consistently feeling off. This tension built and built until vampires did what vampires do.

Watching this movie today feels kind of quaint - the orchestral soundtrack and long shots are a marked contrast to most of what I usually watch.
That said, shit still slaps - great use of film to show the different ways food plays a role in our lives, from power to desire to motivation. The central story of Tampopo gathering her ramen samurai to help with her shop is great, but not what drove the film for me.

One of my favorite things about this movie is how textural it is - from various depictions of work (including a depiction of hand tool woodworking!), to allowing us to experience buildings as an inhabitant, to gorgeous nature shots, to sensuous curves from fuckin’, every moment in this movie is a feast for the eyes. I saw it in 40mm imax, and that is definitely the right way to watch it.
