This film exemplifies what’s wrong with Hollywood. It begins with a fantastic premise, carried by a phenomenal lead, and demands complexity and thought from the viewer. As a horror film, it takes a restrained approach, focusing on elements that genuinely terrify—religion and death. However, like many Hollywood movies, it feels compelled to conform to box-office expectations, pushing for a neatly resolved ending that provides relief for the protagonist. The first half is incredibly strong, but ultimately, the film falls short. Regardless, Hugh Grant’s performance deserves 4 stars.
