The OG hostage thriller that everyone has been emulating since. Pacino chews scenery in gripping fashion, and Cazale, who could easily have been overshadowed by Pacino’s chaotic energy, turns in a great understated performance that is responsible for quite a bit of the film’s tension, since he is the wild card. This film is impressive not only in its technical achievement and performances, but also in its surprisingly well-rounded depiction of gay characters. One of the most sympathetic scenes in the movie is between Sonny and Leon. For this era, that was a bold step to take.

The first half of this film is vastly more interesting than the second, and I was hoping this would be a rare horror film where the thrill would come from a battle of ideas, but alas the second half devolves into pretty standard horror fare and even the debates become more far-fetched and stretch believability. The simulation talk was kind of a joke, as well as the basement reveal. Still, points for good acting, especially Hugh Grant, and a very creepy, promising opening half.

I loved Cop 223’s story. He was an endearing character to follow and Brigitte Lin’s character had an intriguing air of mystery about her. Just as their story seemed to be getting started, it ended in favor of what was a much less engrossing story for me. Faye struck me as creepy in her behavior (if you disagree, just reverse the roles and tell me a man entering a woman’s apartment on the sly wouldn’t be condemned) and her mannerisms…

Close up on Joan Crawford’s fear-stricken face and see: a single tear rolls loose from her eye. Acting mastery.

A nice little noir whose first act is a bit too long but makes up for it with the last. Some really nice camera moments help to ratchet up the tension. Jack Palance looks like Lurch’s grandfather.
