    Separate Tables

    ★★★★★

Separate Tables is one of those amazing experiences where there is almost zero action in the film, yet the writing and the acting make the viewer feel the destructive power and the emotional drain of human relationships.

The entire film takes place at a small hotel in Bournemouth where people go to forget their past and forget there is a whole world leaving them behind. Our main characters are incredibly deep and complex, and there are some amazing personalities crashing…

    Beasts of the Southern Wild

Beasts of the Southern Wild is a true work of art. The relationship between Wink and Hushpuppy, my all-time favorite father and daughter combo, is both incredibly tragic and heartrendingly beautiful. Wink is the absolute personification of Dylan Thomas' poem "Do not go gentle into that good night". He is a man with zero formal education, a quick temper, and an unbridled fire for life and his daughter.

In Thomas' poem, there is a line that gets repeated throughout the…

    Paddington in Peru

    ★★★★

Paddington in Peru takes us back to the little bear’s home country, as Paddington and the Browns head to Peru to visit Aunt Lucy after they receive a note from the Mother Superior saying Aunt Lucy is acting strange. When they get there, Aunt Lucy is missing. Paddington and company will need to set out and try to find his sweet aunt and possibly the lost town of El Dorado. This third film has some great action and of course some tear-jerking moments as always. Paddington film series one of the most solid of all time? I think yes. 84/100

    Paddington 2

Paddington 2 aka Paddington in Prison is a great continuation of the first film. I always felt like the Paddington books had great plots, so it’s cool to see these films are keeping that alive. Paddington gets wrongly accused of stealing an old pop-up book that he wanted for Aunt Lucy’s birthday. However, there’s a dangerous magician/entertainer on the loose who is trying to find a long lost treasure. The Browns will try to help Paddington on the outside while Paddington makes some friends in prison who might help get to the bottom of things. 88/100

NO. There is NO WAY anyone can think The Vanishing is a good film. I stopped caring about Rotten Tomatoes years ago, but their consensus review for this film makes me actually laugh out loud. I honestly don’t even know where to begin. The writing is terrible except for a few lines discussing fate. The acting is B movie at best. I think a few friends and I could do better with a camera and some liquid courage. The pacing…

    Cemetery of Splendor

    ★½

When I watched Uncle Boonmee I thought I was missing something due to my lack of knowledge of the Thai culture. After watching Cemetery of Splendor, director Apichatpong Weerasethakul made me unfortunately reverse course. While there are some potentially interesting juxtapositions (dreams and reality, the spiritual and secular world, life and death) none of them have any depth to them. This director toys with the idea of symbolism, but doesn’t actually present anything that can be considered such. He also…
