Classic 70s harmonica score intro. Great action and bloody gunshot kills. It’s a payback movie and it delivers. Some great hollywood oldies like Timothy Carey and Elisha Cook make cameos and more. Karen Black is given very little screen time and I would like to have seen more of her. Duvall very subtlety plays a methodical criminal and killer…he seems nice and reasonable but he’s completely consumed by vengeance. Joe Don Baker is reliable as ever—pretty downplayed. The whole movie in general is not flashy in the slightest and not one drop boring.

The Big Sleep 1946
I expected to like this a lot more. Bogey captures Marlowe better than anyone. Elliott Gould also offers a brilliant interpretation of Marlowe, but as far as era-appropriate noir goes, its Bogey. For me what’s at issue is that most cutesy “banter” of the 40s just kind of annoys me and is better left on the page. And…

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982
All snark aside, this movie melted me to my viscera. I forget sometimes that blockbusters can also be extremely powerful and moving stories. I cried through the majority of the final third…

Howard the Duck 1986
I generally rate on how I feel about a movie, which is of course not remotely scientific. I actually really enjoyed Howard the Duck despite all of its shortcomings. For years I’ve been told that this movie sucks and it was a special effects disaster. Granted I haven’t watched TMNT in a while, but I found Howard’s appearance to be quite pleasant, and it gave me that weird, cozy feeling of watching Dinosaurs or TMNT. Occasionally, he looks super weird…
