This was a weird film. While incredibly stylish, gorgeously animated, and very nicely scored, it's a strange creative choice to talk about "good" and "bad" in such strict binaries - so much so that sometimes it feels like it's written by a child. Nothing very interesting is going on plot-wise either: it seems to tick off story beats and genre tropes with an almost nonsensical break-neck efficiency.

Also can't wrap my head around the mythology of this world: like why…

Easily my favourite movie in a while, it's hilarious, beautiful, shockingly brutal for a film by Dreamworks, and had me holding back tears like 50% of its runtime.

I really wanted to love this film and to some extent I did, but it left me wanting more by feeling somewhat incomplete. It's beautiful and hilarious, but I feel it doesn't do much with its characters. Kinda like how after going on a rushed tour, you manage to hit all the destinations but feel kinda empty inside because you didn't get to process what you just saw. Overall, I would have really liked it if the hi-jinks would have lasted longer. Instead of it feeling like a quirky adventure, this felt more like an unfortunate day that quickly resolved itself.

So after bawling my eyes out I've come to the conclusion that Pinnochio set against the backdrop of fascist Italy is astoundingly beautiful, funny, horrifying and incredibly depressing. It really makes a great companion piece to Pan's Labyrinth.
