Critically underrated. As many reviews already mentioned, it’s essentially “Breakfast Club” Power Rangers, but spends far too long setting up the reboot universe. E.g., Zords aren’t introduced until an hour in the film after some training montages, and the new class barely spends any time in costume. (But you *do* get to know and love each new interpretation of the classic crew.) Fans just don’t like change. Iron Man costumes and Transformers-looking Zords in trailers made people too afraid to…

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

    ★★½

After rewatching all of the Paul W.S Anderson flicks this weekend, I can honestly say this reboot has grown on me.

It’s a mess. Terrible CG, too many wink-and-a-nod jokes for gamers, awkward pacing, and a story mash-up of various R.E. games…but it’s more faithful than any other adaptation. Had they solely stuck to RE1 (and had a bigger budget), it’d honestly be pretty solid.

    Don't Breathe 2

An awful and unnecessary sequel. It’s just two hours of unlikeable people doing unlikeable things to an innocent little girl. Unfortunately, she’s more of a plot point than a character, so you don’t even care about her. Their solution? Attempt to humanize the kidnapping rapist. Some truly baffling decisions with this one.

    ★★

Although it’s stunningly gorgeous and has a phenomenal soundtrack, this one feels pretty hollow. It’s a paint-by-numbers and predictable story that solely relies on references to get by. Minus said references, there really isn’t a whole lot here. It lacks heart, humor, and depth—it just feels so bland and generic. (And, yes, I know I’m not the target audience, but I still expect more out of films for kiddos.)
