Feel like the real-life story is fairly interesting, however this depiction just fails to do anything particularly spectacular during its runtime to warrant a full-length feature; even at an hour and half this plodded along at a snail's pace. Bland and generic script with clichés galore, all the characters are incredibly one-note. I did enjoy some of the visuals depicting the vast darkness of the ocean, really hammering home that feeling of isolation and coldness I imagine people who do this sort of job in reality would face constantly. I'll likely forget I've even seen this in a few years time.

Never knew before how very My Fair Lady-esque Richard Burton's past was. Quite enjoyed the journey seeing Harry Lawtey's portrayal of him over the years transform from a young and bright lad with the potential but lack of means to succeed, into the actor he eventually became. His father/son relationship with Toby Jones is lovely to see unfold; the real-life Philip Burton sounded like a wonderful kind soul, and I adored the overall message that direct blood isn't necessarily true…

Whoever approved the marketing for this movie wants a telling off, the main "twist" would have been so much more effective if it wasn't broadcast so blatantly in the inescapable trailers and posters. That said, damn what an engrossing film, was really rooting for Sophie Thatcher's character, so many moments where my blood was boiling just with all the subtext of abusive relationships and control. The other "twist" that wasn't in the trailers had me gobsmacked, really brought another layer…

Really wanted to like this one, but was not a huge fan of the covid scenes set right at the peak of the pandemic in the present day with the main character gallavanting off on his worldwide adventure around London and Tokyo. Think the intention was supposed to be romantic but I just thought he was being incredibly selfish. It had some beautiful moments in there whenever the love interest and her father were reflecting on the trauma of surviving Hiroshima, but these took up too little of the runtime unfortunately.
