The couple trying to find “serenity” by taking a cruise to India, and Nigel’s fascination in the man’s story are equally perverted. Once the story plays out its ending on the ship, the couple can no longer entertain it from a safe distance and it becomes dangerous. Their indulgence turns into sharp terror, reflecting the extension of orientalism into a fear of terrorism

The three films are loosely connected by themes of dreaming, weird relationships with food, and total obedience to another person. While the film is really direct with its themes: the first film literally opens with Eurythmics’s Sweet Dreams, the anthology presents characters who kill, kidnap, and self-harm to prove their loyalty to someone they are desperate to please, and each film features prophetic dreams, I’m not sure I got much out of this anthology. By the end of each film I felt both bewildered and a sense that the story didn’t have much of a point and was more meant to accommodate Yorgos Lanthimos’s weirdness.
