Seeing an actual Clint western before probably would've enhanced things but honestly even having seen Dirty Harry deepens his performance. No glory, no excitement... Just the grim realities of revenge and violence under stunningly beautifuk landscapes. "Deserve”'s got nothing to do with it.

The thrill of being courted by Elvis Fucking Presley contrasted with the boredom of actually being Elvis Fucking Presley's girl. Hazy memories (though clearly signposted) that in no way disguise how weird it is that he's interested in her, beautifully empty houses full of luxury that you don't know what to do with. Spaney does a lot with a character whose sense of self has essentially been erased, Elordi manages to project the aura of Elvis without actually looking much like him. It makes the bursts of violence and the drug use all that more jarring.

When something's so wickedly funny, so thoroughly absorbing, who cares if there's not exactly a wealth of substance? Fincher doing what he does best, some occasionally insipid (and purposeful) voiceover aside. It may not be new or unpredictable but there's such a palpably weird energy that you just gotta see what's next.
