A typical action blockbuster would spend 5 minutes on the romantic interest plot line, Miami Vice spends well over 20-25 uninterrupted minutes on it. To me, this encapsulates what sets this movie apart. It knows what’s important in a story like this. The entire plot hinges on their relationship and their chemistry. But this expands to other decisions, too. There’s no time spent on explaining plot. Jargon is thrown at us rapidly. Why? Because it’s not important that we understand…

Drive My Car 2021
Finally watched the Criterion Blu-ray that I got an embarrassing long time ago... This rewatch restored something in me - a patience. I love it.
It's not specific to this film, but I found myself drawn to the little camera shakes that occur on exterior car shots, the ones that are unavoidable and organic. There's a certain energy that they bring that I just love, I wish there was a word for it.
Speaking of words, this film has such…

Happy Hour 2015
It’s truly a privilege to be able to witness a talented director’s early works, when they’re still piecing together the cinematic language they will later be known for. Hamaguchi’s Happy Hour is rich in character, nuanced in its theme, despite, or rather because of, being a touch bloated in its structure (5hr 18min running time). It makes Hamaguchi’s more recent efforts, with their refined balance between length and depth, even more rewarding.

Contempt 1963
This is the only Godard film that remains a true favorite of mine - the only one that I can return to and enjoy repeatedly. I think part of the reason for this is its conversation about gender and relationships is just as evocative as Godard's playful experiments with cinematic form. Whether you're watching with a technical eye or an emotional one, there's plenty to dig into and discuss long after the lights come up.

Meltdown: A Nuclear Family's Ascension into Madness 2023
World Premiere @ Fantaspoa 2023!!
Could not be more grateful for this festival and this community. The energy here has been off the charts all week. Someone showed up in a shirt saying “Nuclear Family” on the front, several people told us they dropped tabs before, someone ran out of the screening and threw up. Shoutout to João for getting this screening sold out — truly no better place to premiere a weird little movie like this. Thank you Porto Alegre!!!!
