Not sure if it’s a smart movie that came out dumb or if the whole thing was actually just incredibly dumb all along.
There is a Frank Capra-esque scene in the very beginning that’s a powerful example of visual narration. The main character’s life journey summed up by the evolution of a static image. Great stuff.

My first reaction to this was thinking it was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
It probably still is but damn I want to see it again.
An unwatchable masterpiece.
Was this a positive movie about a man finding dignity in his low-status job and happiness in the most ordinary things in life? Or was it the depressing tale of an autolesive man who doesn’t want to suffer and therefore chose not to be happy?
Reading the reviews it seems like the former, but watching the movie it clearly feels like the latter.

This was just bad, in my view.
Felt like an unfunny parody of a standard Lanthimos work, and reminded me a lot of Beau Is Afraid. Like in that movie, everything feels surreal and over the top without a precise reason, and the final result is both gratuitous and painful to watch. Kind of childish in the way it wants to be provocative. Stupid in the way it wants to be artsy.
