Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 2022
fantastic film. only small issue was that one villain would have been too scary for me until middle school, but that he was so spooky made the movie just that much better overall. funny and clever, some really sincere heart-warming and tear-jerking moments, some fun existential material, a really yummy story and analysis about the fight against totalitarianism. probably one of the most substantively hopeful texts ive engaged with in a while :)

Avatar: The Way of Water 2022
i thought that the new strategies of the colonizers were interesting representations of what happens in real life, but the movie still has the white saviors set-up and also has the colonizers and the indigenous people as two different species, which has troubling implications. i guess it’s good that the avatar movies tell the audience colonizing is bad, but that this movie’s story about colonialism is still literally about humans and not humans, it really didn’t encourage me to engage…
