Points for having Pattinson star in another delightfully weird picture.

Strange though, because this one didn’t quite hit for me. Like, it’s good, but maybe I was expecting some fantastic scifi satire, and instead I just got a movie that I found to be decent. Some great comedy parts, though.

I feel like RPats and Naomi Ackie are the only performances in this movie I actually liked.

    FUCK NO

Some of the most repulsive horror I’ve ever seen, but with Moliere’s sense of social satire.

The whole experience is so calculatedly viscerally unnerving. Every choice creates a sense of nauseating dread. I wanted this movie to be over so damn early. But I couldn’t look away. God it was freaky.

    Really well done.

Side note: I loved the whole drop shipping element of The Substance company. Grounds the movie in the now, and also adds some fun commentary on the evolution of the commodity market place.

The first half is all neon, dread, and style. Not to mention a great opening scene. If the movie went on being this good, I’d buy it as a modern cult classic.

Some reviews mention the economy of storytelling as a selling point. Fair. But not my style. The storytelling “economy” takes out anything that isn’t action or a one liner past…

This is a hard review to write.

Twenty years ago, my sister got sick. That night, I was at the premiere of The Polar Express.

My dad and I watched the very first public showing of this movie, at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago. We were lucky to have a friend who gave us tickets they won in a charity auction.

Two years before that, my sister and I were in a warmly lit office building in downtown Chicago.…
